help for the metrically obsessed

Stumptuous tweeted this link today, but here it is in case you missed it. Very enjoyable reading.

PS my lower back is killing me from gardening, of all things, so I took it easy tonight and just did arms and legs and a few sets of incline fly.

Heh. I'm the poster child for metrically obsessed. That I will be generating nice lists of numbers motivates me to go to the gym when nothing else does.

Also, for me, APE units pretty much equals vacation days... I always knew that the solution to my fitness issues would be to become independently wealthy. ;-)

Excellent points in that article; most of these measures are borrowed from exercise physiology where they actually serve a purpose (and the folks using those tools have a better idea of what they do and don't purport to measure, either directly or by proxy).

Applied to oneself, though, a person can go down a rabbit hole chasing numbers without purpose. I wonder how much movement is like eating, in that the sensual experience is integral to the satisfaction of the activity, and the effect it has on the body? Very interesting...
