protein and supplements

Do you consume protein (powder, bar) or other supplements?

If not, why not?

I used to do whey protein after a workout. Now I have milk protein intolerance and not only is there no whey protein in my life, there is also no milk, cheese, ice cream etc. I wish I hadn't done it...I already have a problem with soy protein, so I can't take that either.

I don't take other supplements other than what my doctors prescribe for migraine prevention.

I use flax oil and vitamin B, and I use vitamin C as an anti-inflammatory when I'm sick. I find the flax & B are really important for my daily function. As for supplements, not really. I use whole foods like almonds and a glass of milk if I need a boost. I eat a lot of fish and fruit as well, so I'm okay except for iron and I can't do iron supplements so I suck it up and eat liver. I use rice or hemp protein powder occasionally in food for the family.

Did a Dr suggest that your whey use was related to the allergies? Because that really sucks. :(

I use papaya enzymes sometimes to break down milk—I have trouble with it once in a while. Papain and bromelain are great for your stomach, if you're good with papaya and pineapple. I can't do a wide array of foods either and it actually gets depressing sometimes.

I'm not clear whether you're looking for suggestions for a new post-workout protein or not. If you are, there are hemp and brown rice protein powders on the market. Or, more natural and whole foodsy, how are you with eggs?

I take whey, because my body tolerates that well, but I've been thinking of experimenting with a BCAA supplement. I also take fish oil and a multivitamin.

I'm still more tentative and casual, and I don't tend to supplement my protein unless I'm getting what I've dubbed "protein-hunger", and that is usually correlated with crappy low-protein diet for several days. I don't like cooking most meats from raw, so this occasionally becomes an issue. There was a bottle of hemp protein mix that I picked up from Trader Joe's, which is a sludgey and unappetizing product that really belongs mixed into something dense.

I have noticed that my personal biochemistry seems to do better with vitamin D, B, and caffeine, though a lot of that is entirely possibly related to a stupid sleep schedule, an aversion to the evil daystar, and what quacks like something on the ADD spectrum. Also St. John's Wort, for what quacks like adolescent-onset depression. (Never formally diagnosed with either, but there is a family history of both.)

I eat 10-40 grams of protein a day in the form of whey powder supplements. I'm a vegetarian, trying to eat low salt and moderate-to-low-carb -- whey powder is the easiest source for low salt vegetarian protein.

I like Designer Whey, and get their mixed berry flavor. I put it in yogurt or herbal tea.

I also take fish oil capsules, lots of different vitamins, and add flax seed to the bread I bake.

I use whey protein powder and the occasional protein bar (rule of thumb: If I find those awful things appetizing, I really need one).

I eat very little meat (dislike to have it in my kitchen, eating out is fine, but veggies are so much more interesting) and dislike nearly all soy products, so I have a hard time meeting the most stingy protein intake recommendation of 0.8 grams per kg of bodyweight.

To make things more fun, I have an intolerance vs. nearly all no-calorie artificial sweeteners, so I have to bring my reading glasses when buying supplements.

When I remember to take it, I take a zinc supplement in the hope of motivating my immune system to do something about the common cold. As it should not be taken within some hours of having milk products, I manage about 25 mg a week.

You are sure it's the protein and not the sugar?

I take home-made protein balls with me for bouldering sessions, which are the most physically intense things I do, as well as trying to get a proper meal afterwards.

I take fish oil and assorted vitamins, but that's primarily for mental health and warding off deficiencies (I have a mystery vitamin C deficiency, even though I should be getting more than enough in my diet).

If I've got an injury or have generally beaten myself into the ground, I sometimes take turmeric capsules (natural anti-inflammatory).
